A Study on Factors Affecting the Continuation of Volunteer Activitiesby the Elderly

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify the factors affecting the continuation of volunteer activities by the elderly, including socio-demographic characteristics of elderly volunteers, their motivations to participate, volunteer management procedures, interpersonal relations, and managerial forms of volunteer centers. The study utilized a structured survey instrument to interview 356 elderly over the age of 60 who were registered in 10 volunteer centers across the Seoul and Gyeonggi province area. Data were analyzed through descriptive analysis, t-test ANOVA (followed up by a scheffe test), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. Results of the research are as follows. 1) Of the various factors, the education and training involved in the volunteer management process and the managerial forms of volunteer centers affected the duration of elderly volunteer activities. 2) Among the socio-demographic characteristics of the elderly volunteers, economic status affected the elderly¡¯s willingness to continue their volunteer activities. Pursuit of values and fun, supervision and assessment also affected the duration of volunteer activities. 3) With regards to the degree of volunteer activity involvement, health conditions and economic status had effects among socio-demographic characteristics. Among participation motif, pursuit of rewarding experience and self-realization, pursuit of social compensation relationship with fellow volunteers also had effects. The results indicate the need for more development of various programs, including health promotion programs development of professional volunteer education instructors; social compensation; facilities for the strengthening of volunteers¡¯ interpersonal ties; and strengthening the capacity of volunteer program managers.
